Why Are Nurses So Rude?

There are so many ruse nurses in every hospital, all over the world. It seems as if they think they are entitled to have an attitude, just because they are busy. Worker in almost every profession get busy, but they are not automatically ruse to everyone who is in their line of vision.

Nurses, on the other hand, speak to other workers in the hospital as if they are speaking to someone who is not worthy of their time. I work in a hospital and no one has ever been ruse to me - except all of the nurses.

One time I was just passing by one of them and this nut demanded to know why I did not go in the other direction. "Can't you see I busy writing notes?", she said, "I don't have time for the constant interruptions". She was definitely mentally disturbed.

I simply ignored her, except to say that if she ever spoke to me in that tone of voice again, she would be reported to her superiors. Her attitude just made my dislike of nurses more concrete.

I have met a couple of seemingly nice nurses, but the nasty attitude soon came to the surface.

  1. I am not condoning the behavior of the nurse you mentioned. She was rude and unprofessional. But as a nurse myself, I resent the title of this blog. I'm not sure if you have ever been sick or hospitalized but when you are, your nurse is all you have. Doctors have the final say at the end of the day but when they are not around, nurses are their eyes and ears. Every detail and encounter has to be thoroughly documented and if not, it could mean the loss of their liscense and at the same time, their livelihood. Everyday more and more responsibility is put on nurses with no reduction of workload. This may attribute the the "rudeness" of the nurse you mentioned. Just remember not all nurses are like the one you mentioned and many cherish the role. Before you title a blog "I Hate Nurses" think about how much that nurse had going on at that moment that was far more important than giving directions or whatever it was she didn't do as though she was working the customer service desk of a grocery store

    1. Right...the customer service person at the grocery store is a lowly slug compared to a NURSE! Lol! Yes Ms. Anonymous Nurse, you may not know it but you too are a BITCH NURSE that thinks you are better than every other person in the hospital, just look at your post. BITCH! That is why WE HATE YOU. Gallup, Press Ganey all those polls are done by people who have respect for the profession but do not have to encounter those working in the profession every day.

    2. All you have done is proven us right. It's your fucking job to maintain a professional attitude at work, and to serve your patients. Your time is no more important than anyone else's.

Yes, and what a shitty and sorry experience that was. When I gave birth to my daughter, the nurse snapped at me constantly and refused to hand her to me (from the incubator) when I was trying to sit up in the hospital bed. Rarely have I felt as scared and alone as during my post-partum hospitalization, due at least in part to that bitch. Before you go all, "remember the nurses...." keep in mind that the patient's memories might not be good ones.

    4. I for one LOVE the title. Nurses are monsters. Pure and simple. If they had a brain in their heads they wouldn't be doing that for a living. They'd be doctors. And they think they're so saintly when the rest of the world hates them.

Some of them are deluded enough to take the job, thinking they'll land a doctor husband. Can you imagine a doctor taking some trashy nurse to their fancy college or medical school reunion as their spouse?

    5. Registered nurses have an extensive and very brutal university course-load and are very very educated. Some people don't want to give 12 years of their life to school to become a doctor. You sounds insanely uneducated yourself

      Delete
    6. LOL no they don't. They take basic science courses ... AND NOT INTENSE AT ALL. IF YOU THINK THAT'S INTENSE THEN YOU MUST NOT BE VERY SMART. JUST ADMIT THAT YOU'RE NOT SMART ENOUGH TO BE A DOCTOR.. BYE.

    7. Nurse are just people that have education to get them by. Just because they are stressed out about their work load doesn't mean they should have a attitude. I work 12 hr shifts as well as a sonographer doesn't mean I treat people bad or have a know it all attitude.

    8. My current hospital stay is a visit in hell and besides the same canned green beans day after day after day after day and the raw chicken that bleeds when pressed with a fork, the nurses are unresponsive, don't answer call buttons, let alarms and IV poles beep for an hour at 3am while I observe them playing on their cell phones. I could use a little help going to the bathroom but since that rarely happens, I unhook my cords and machines and heart moniter patches and drag my heavy wound vac machine and IV pole to the bathroom just a few days after major emergency surgery. But nursey, don't you dare leave your Candy Crush game while I'm tripping over cords and dragging machines around. I used to think you were overworked and understaffed but after this week, I also think you think you feel entitled and lazy upon request. This is a good hospital?? Dead or alive, sick or well, I just want out of here.

    10. Do you know why Nurses are pissed off, it's because they have to spend all day dealing with the retarded public, who have absolutely no clue what a nurse does, and couldn't give a shit. Just check out some of the comments - 'not smart enough to be doctors', 'basic education' 'lazy' 'no brains'. Yeah, so stupid that they're the ones keeping you and everyone else ALIVE! Oh, but the Gallup and Ganey scores are done by people in the know - horseshit - they're done by other retards who get pissed off because they're unstable diabetics who nurse refused to give them a soda. 'You're here to serve me' - no, nurses are there to save you, if you want a servant than get a butler. 'Didn't hand her from the incubator' - are you fucking retarded, they're in the incubator to KEEP THEM ALIVE!!! That's akin to saying 'pull out the trachy so they can have a cigarette'. Moron! I'm a sonographer...blah blah blah' - Like massaging 1 person at a time with a ultrasound wand is sooooo stressful!! Yeah, nurses just want to land a doctor and they're not smart enough to be doctors! Ah Ha, that's why a lot of them go into med school after completing nursing! As for landing a doctor as a husband - yeah of course, a asbergers bookworm, who's never there, and doesn't get a decent wage for many decades, is such a good husband! Even though the vast majority of nurse's husbands are not doctors. And the halfwit that disconnected all their life saving cords, machines and drags their wound vacs after 'major emergency surgery' - tripping over cords, and then blames the nurse for the kitchen mistakes... I applaud your ability to not Darwinising yourself. Next time try a little harder, as we certainly don't need your genius genes in the gene pool.

      Delete
    11. Wow, angry much? Scary to think you're there to keep people "alive". You don't diagnose, perform surgeries, nor prescribe medications, unless you are a NP but you are required to follow orders, yes, from those bookworms. You should also adopt an ounce of compassion and decorum when dealing with the "retarded" public, as you affectionately title us but this is something that doesn't seem to exist in you according to your tone. I've personally been to enough hospitals as a patient and visitor and they're basically operated on the same premise that matches your ethos on the nurse level. I've not heard one doctor, ever, say they are there to save lives, nor have I ever heard a doctor say they are all the patient has when in their care. Your ego is so extreme and you are clearly a narcissist who should have no place in taking care of the infirm. Your anger keeps you at such a basal level on the food chain I find it ironic you barked at the last poster concerning their contribution to the gene pool. Go back and read what you wrote with a sane mind and find another trade.

    12. I love how just because your a nurse you think your job is the only job that consists of hard or busy work load. People don't come to see nurses they come to see doctors. And I also work in a hospital and there's plenty nurses who walk around like their better then everyone and theres no need for that crap.

    14. I hate them too. Even before anyone said anything to the nurse she started in on my mother, talked down to her and because my mom is about 90% deaf leaned in close to her face and yelled. My mom can read lips. My mom is also starting to not be able to remember things. She stated to her nurse the other day she was going to sell her house and come live with me. The nurse went back to her supervisor and told them. Now, no nursing services are coming for my mom even though I told them it's not true. I don't think they wanted to come there in the first place.

    15. I currently work in healthcare as an ultrasound technician. In my career of 5years ive never met a more disrespectful, highly entitled bunch of people. Today 8/26/20 i was doing my job. Pt had noone jn the room that was my time to take 20min to perform the procedure. A RN came in during my exam to give meds. I told the rn, that can wait til after the exam. Now i know pts need their meds and etc, but at the same time we are there to help as well. She decided to still rudely interrupt my exam and begin to move the pt while im in procedure. The patient had to tell her put that on the table and it can wait til after. The rn didnt like that she still interjected herself and attitude. She then uttered something and i told her im in procedure she shut me up by saying were not going to argue infront of the pt in a condescending tone and said she would report me. She reported me by sending all department heads an email. I then continued to follow up with the nursing sup who was willing to listen but was busy. I understand that. I waited politely... we then set up a time after an outpatient i had only to be denied to speak to her because my manager talked them. My manager didnt even communicate that this was happening nor came to me for my side of the story. Anyway, at the end of the day i had another encounter with a rn. My second to last pt was spanish speaking, my spanish is okay not great. Anyway pt needs helps its my instinct to press the rn call button. They answer i say pt would like to speak to her rn. Why at the end shes asking for my name which i didnt mind giving to her but what for. Her response was vague, not patients around she pissed me off. Im talking to myself loud but not to her. She walks over with a tone like i work for her. And says im disrespectful. I said i dont work for you and dont talk to me like that again. I was done! Went to manager expressed ive had it with the rns. During this talk my director and manager said what i couldve did better with the first incident. Im like nothing im in procedure she shouldve waited. You know they said i shouldve allowed the the rn to give meds. Im like that doesnt make since so you want me to let the rn disrespect me and my job title is what you’re saying? Majority of rns are dicks. They are rude and thibk they are entitled, my director proved that point saying its RN driven. I said well if thats the case have the rn do the ultrasound!

    1. It makes me so sad when I see people making such sick allegations and generalizations. Some nurses are horrible, that's true. Just like some techs in psych hospitals are horrible. Every profession has bad eggs, but to make such gross, hurtful, hate filled allegations, you must have been through some bad shit. I'm sorry nurses dumped on you, but not every nurse is like that. We all are individual people responsible for our own actions and it is very short sighted to make accusations and blanket statements about a group of millions of people if you don't know all of them.

    3. You are correct. All these generalizations about nurses are wrong. Making such hateful statements are wrong, but when you come on here as a nurse, making bitter statements about how horrible pts are, how you put up with them and their family members "bitching", you do realize you give them validation, don't you?

And I'm not saying that as some uniformed person that couldn't possibly understand. I'm a nurse just like you. I've had shifts where I've broken down and cried I've been dumped on so much. I've had shifts where I went to my car and literally screamed. But other people's hate doesn't validate you spewing your own.

As a whole nurses are the least educated medical professional, lazy, rude and condescending to anyone they view "under them, and rude and hateful to anyone they are threatened by. I have utmost respect for the floor techs because they truly have a hard, stressful, and demading job. Nurses chart and give orders and complain how hard it is to be a nurse.

    3. Really anons? Mop monkeys? Do not validate such hateful people! You realize with every insult you fling back, "fuck you", "retard", "you'll be at my mercy one day", "techs are stupid", you give their hateful generalizations validation and support? What will that solve?

And excuse me anon #2, the techs are ANGLES. I am a nurse and would never survive without my techs. We work as a team. Doctors, nurses, techs. It is not a competition about who is smart or stupid, educated or not, we work together to restore sick people to health.

But anon #1, nurses do work their asses off to get their education. They are smart and it is not easy. You do my shift then come back and tell me how you did? Techs deserve every respect. They are hardworking and as a nurse, I wouldn't survive without mine, but do not think all we do is chart and voss others around. While our techs do many important tasks that we do as well, we have a lot of things we have to do for pts that they aren't trained for. Administering meds, assessing and monitoring pts condition, foleys, IVs, the list goes on.

    4. So sad that so many of the responses seem to be about defending egos. There is a real problem in the medical world from doctors and above all the way down to the patients. This is so disheartening. Everyone is displacing their anger on everyone else without addressing the real issues. Nurses are displacing their anger from being mistreated by their superiors on their help mates and worst of all their patients! This is so sad.

Also the condescending, demeaning and threatening are actually quite scary. Wow. What can be done?

      1. I've already paid for treatment. It's called tax. Buy a dictionary and look up 'tax'.

      2. Yes I am trailer trash, and likely more rich and paying into the system than you.

So if when you ask me that stupid question while I am on my way to the office to urgently call a doctor, please excuse me that right then .I Don't care that you have flowers that need a vase.. grow up and get over yourselves.

  16. Nurses need more ethics classes for sure. When I gave birth, I've never been treated so shitty in my life. My sister attempted suicide and two nurses were speaking like two little middle school girls behind the curtain saying, "If she had just looked up the right way, then that would save us all the trouble." Really?! Wow.

It must get tiresome. Try to put yourself in that situation if you can. The nurses I work with are quite compassionate and do care for their patients. 22. Nice threat, but in real life, the medical board ain't going to investigate whiny bitches like yourself. They will just wipe their asses on your bullshit moaning, because they're staffed with nurses themselves, and they have an acute sense of smell for bullshit peddled by whiny bitches such as yourself - and they're fully aware of the tattling bitches trying to target nurses. Yeah, so keep threatening to snitch on nurses, and your hospital file will get the 'whiny snitch needing repeated and severe enemas' stamp. Those companies don't care, as you're nothing to them. So go ahead and report all you like, but those companies are laughing away at how deluded you are, in thinking that your complaints are going to do a farts difference. As for getting even in hospital, go right ahead being a bitchy princess. I do hope you enjoy repeated enemas, no sleep and being a pin cushion - and no, it's not bogus. I always get one smart ass that says "We seen it all before" or "you'll be okay" like my feelings of humiliation and voulnerabilty don't matter. I get what you seen, that's not the point! Some nurses need to comprehend that sexual abuse survivors or victims need to be accommodated like not having our sexual organs out unless it's really nessacery, being told what's going on and not just doing whatever they want, if there's going to be a male dr, and having very minimal staff touching them.
When I fave birth in 2016 it was a nightmare. The nurse walked in on me completely unclothed after I told her to wait, I was mortified and extremely pissed off. They had a male dr just walk in and sit his ass right in front of MY vagina without letting me know at all who tf he was and the idiot didn't even see my libia on right. There is absolutely NO dignity.

In 2012 my sister was in the hospital for spinal surgery and as they were taking her catheter out some rude ass nurse opens the f ing door as my sister's legs were spread out and has a f ing conversation with the other 2 nurses. Anyone could've walked by and seen her. She was also humiliated.
When my aunt was dying of stage 4 Neuroendocrine Carcinoma the nurses left her gown all the way down with her full breasts exposed.

  42. I so agree with the OP! Every bizarrely self-important woman I meet lately turns out to be a nurse. The fact that roughly half of American nurses don't even have a college degree (making it clear that their job doesn't even require critical thinking skills) also makes me wonder why they seem to expect us to treat them with such awe? They pass out meds, monitor vitals and record both basically. It's a working class degree that pays well because it's a boring and repetitive job made worse by a ruthless healthcare system. None of that makes me impressed with them or their abilities. Sorry, not sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nurses: A lot of you here validate the fact that you are bitchy because of psychological distress from all the abuse you take from patients and doctors, but are mad to be called out as bitchy and dont want to be generalized while you treat even the sweetest patient asking for a reasonable question like garbage because well, you can't be bothered by "healthy people" asking "dumb" questions.

In the past, my ex went to the ER due to an extreme pain in his lower abdomen. They had put him on a bed, taken him to an empty room in the hospital, and while he was suffering from excruciating pain, not a single soul came to check on him for hours. He called 911 to have someone rescue him from oblivion. They discovered that his appendix had ruptured while waiting. He didn't whine or yell at anyone while he waited, he was patient, and politely asked for help but no one did anything, because of course they were dying people elsewhere. Do you think he should have been more vocal? Would he have had to yell at one of you to get some help?

You say that patients yell and mistreat you all the time, but do you sometimes put yourself in their shoes? Patients are going to be scared, uncomfortable, confused, and VERY vulnerable in the hospital. So even the nicest person can act defensively towards a nurse with an attitude problem. There will be entitled and annoying patients, and under vulnerable circumstances, they will become monsters. You can't retaliate every single time or go around and take it out on bystanders to feel better.

When you go ahead an mistreat others because you are miserable, you are creating a toxic environment, a vicious cycle of tit for tat, and a self-fulfilled prophecy that patients are going to ruin your day will become reality because you will already have a shitty attitude and patients will react to it. Stop the toxic cycle. You are perpetuating this bitchy culture. You are allowing this culture to be acceptable.

Get therapy. Don't hospitals offer this to practicioners? Aren't you taught in nursing school that you will be facing these types of harships daily? If you are understaffed and overworked, why aren't you protesting? Why is there no uprising? If the system is unfixable, then change career, stop being a parasite and infecting other workers and patients with your negativity. And if you go work at a private clinic, do not bring that toxicity there too. People pay for a better treatment, so make an effort to give a better treatment.

What is the whole point of taking pride in keeping people alive, if the people you keep alive hate you for treating them like cattle? Isn't it sad? Don't you want to change that?

    Doctors:

Any med students here looking to become a doctor: We get it, your parents have invested a fortune in your education, you've invested half of your life in getting your Doctorate, you'll be bathing in prestige and will be called a hero. But all that education and prestige doesnt mean anything if you act like an arrogant condecending twat towards nurses and other colleagues. You are at the top of the foodchain, and the way you treat others will influence the way they treat others as a result. You're not a better human than others because of the privilege you were born with. Be humble, it goes a long way. For those who are working full-time to pay for their med school, props to you, and you will understand real hardships, treat others fairly, and earn your respect appropriately.

  47. I've come to refer to the hateful world of comment sections as "the trash fire of the internet". Making a generalization that all nurses are rude (and creating a website to spew hate about them) is... just....wow. There are many, many nurses out there working hard to help people, and they deserve credit. "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind."

    ReplyDelete
  48. I worked in a nursing home and can 100% say nurses are extremely rude for no reason. Even the HR manager was the rudest person there. They were bullying a new indian CNA for no reason. The girl was delivering a tray to a patient and the HR manager barked at her "that's the wrong order what's wrong with you. Idk why the f__ we hired you." She said this loud, for all the patients in the cafeteria to here. And this sweet girl just nodded her head and didn't fire anything back.
As a CNA any time I had to report to a nurse she wouldn't even look up from her computer screen or anything she was doing. I was so beneath her she wouldn't make eye contact with me. Even on my last day there. They always act like they're too busy doing more important things. And the nurses at the nurse station had a favorite CNA girl (who was obnoxious, loud, and toxic). She would sit at the nurses station with them and read magazines and talk about their spouses. For hours on the clock. Anytime you spoke with a nurse the conversation would quickly go to "why aren't you working faster, pay attention to the lights (patient alerts), you didn't do this that and the other thing yet." While they sit on their ass and act so smug. Once i had conflict with another CNA and it was brought up and the nurse says "ah, trouble in paradise?" They make these snarky little comments trying to allude to the fact that we have it easy and couldn't possibly comprehend the stress and responsibility of a nurse. Yet we are on our feet all day literally nonstop moving while they bicker complaints and sit at a desk or roll a cart of supplies down the hall for one patient.
My experiences as a patient have been bad as well. Once i came for a yearly checkup and the doctor was 2 hours late. Next time I came I was 10 minutes late and a nurse/receptionist was extremely rude lecturing me about how i need to manage my time better and how they almost cancelled the appointment, while glaring at me with evil aggressive eyes. Then at the appointment the doctor is like "yeah that's nothing to worry about your fine." And bills me $80. A time early on in college i went to the doctor cuz i was super light headed like i was gonna pass out and my stools had been green and super thin. The doctor just said "you're just dehydrated drink more gatorade." I was like okay... and i went on about something i read online that might apply to me. He's like walking out the door while i'm talking. Then standing at the doorway he turns to me and says "nope youre dehydrated" with this jerk look on his face.
Look starting out i had cancer when i was 6 and i wouldn't be here if there weren't doctors. But my experience being an adult and having doctor visits. It's been horrible. Anything in medical field has been mostly bad treatment.

  49. Emergency RN here. I am pretty horrified by these comments. I had no idea there was a community of people that felt this way about my profession. I’ve seen some rude nurses in my profession but at least in my hospital it seems they are really nice. I try to go out of my way to be nice to other staff members of the hospital regardless of their title.

I had no idea about this perception of nurses being so prevalent. It’s not a coincidence that this many people would hate our profession.

I know I am not always liked by all of my patients because I am often asked to do things for them that I have no control over. I got punched the other day because an elderly man thought I made the decision to move him to a semi private room. He complained that he liked the other room better. I would try to explain the unit manager made the decision because they needed it for a patient who had an infectious disease and needed isolation. But he went into a rage about how I was doing this to him.

I think a good nurse will try to do everything they can for their patients best interest but it’s not always possible and we take the brunt of the blame for it.

  50. Wow. So the first comment was published in 2011. It's now 2022 and sadly, nothing has changed because all you nurses are just as awful as you were 10 years ago, and 20 years ago, etc.

People come to the hospital because they're sick and in pain and at the very least you would expect the medical staff to treat their fellow patient with decency and respect. But NO, now it hurts your ego to do that. Now you say that it's not in your job resume. Last time I checked, acting like horse shit wasn't listed as a job requirement either and yet you do it anyway.
You hurt and bully people. You judge and (as of 2020) spread misinformation and you are so glee about.
Please fuck off because I'm done

  52. I used to work as a doctor. Of course, a sweeping generalisation is rarely correct and this is no exception, there are lovely nurses and awful nurses but in my experience and comparing this to other professions I have worked in, the british national health service has more than average levels of workplace toxicity and a very large part of that is a culture of bitchiness in nurses. Not all nurses are like this but you see it is the majority of departments in the majority of hospitals. Of course, us doctors are just as bad but it does not change the fact. My hours were awful, my workload completely unreasonable, the quality of postgrad training poor, yet the stress and distress this caused me was nothing compared to the unpleasantness of being bullied by other doctors (50%) and the unhelpfulness, spite and bitchiness of nurses (50%). It was a large part of why I left clinical medicine. I am strong enough to cope but why should I? I had nothing left to prove to myself. The recent staffing and pay crisis in the NHS is going to push stress and pressure levels up and I have noticed that the level of bitchiness has a basal level that never changes and a second component that is directly proportional to the level of pressure. I would rather shoot myself than return to that world.
